What it is:

The Africa Science Journalism Awards (ASJA) celebrate excellence in science reporting by African journalists. Launched by the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA), ASJA recognizes compelling, evidence-based storytelling that elevates African science, innovation, and health breakthroughs to the public.

Now in its second edition, the 2025 awards seek to highlight stories that spark curiosity, drive accountability, and shift narratives around science across the continent.

Why it matters:

Science stories in Africa often go untold—or get buried under jargon and politics. These awards are about giving science journalism its due respect and supporting the journalists who bring research to life in languages and formats that communities actually engage with.

Whether you’re covering climate change, mental health, vaccines, or AI, this is your moment to be recognized and resourced.

Categories include

  • Health & Wellness

  • Environment & Climate

  • Agriculture & Food Systems

  • Technology & Innovation

  • Emerging Voices (for journalists under 30 or with less than 3 years' experience)

  • Editorial Excellence (for media editors who champion science coverage)

What you’ll gain:

  • Cash prizes for each category

  • Regional and continental recognition

  • A chance to shape the future of science storytelling in Africa

  • Opportunities to connect with scientists, editors, and funders

Who should apply:

  • Journalists based in Africa, publishing in any format: print, radio, TV, podcast, blogs, or online media

  • Independent or affiliated journalists (you don’t need to work for a newsroom)

  • Stories must have been published or aired between January 1 – December 31, 2024
